arí, a., „regsam, strebsam” [ar 6—9, besonders ar 9]. Von diesem allgemeinen Begriffe aus scheidet sich die Bedeutung in drei verschiedene Richtungen, nämlich „den Göttern zustrebend, fromm”, oder „den Schätzen zustrebend, habsüchtig, geizig” oder „widerstrebend, feindlich” [ar 11]. Die Ausscheidung der letzten beiden Bedeutungen und die Zurückführung auf den Begriff „nicht gebend”, wie in á-rāvan (BR.), ist bei der durchgehenden Gleichheit der eigenthümlichen Casusentwickelung nicht möglich. Die mancherlei Wortspiele zwischen arí (in der zweiten Bedeutung) und árāti, ja auch die eigenthümliche Bedeutungswendung, in die der Begriff in solchen Anspielungen überzugehen pflegt, zeigen nur, dass die Sänger durch Form und Bedeutung an diese nahe anklingenden Worte (árarivas, árāti bis árāvan) erinnert wurden.
