    aratní, m., ursprünglich wol der Theil, wo ein Glied in das andere eingefügt, eingelenkt ist [von ar 10]; namentlich 1) wo der Unterarm in den Oberarm eingelenkt ist, der Elnbogen; 2) der Unterarm (als das eingelenkte), aber nur in der Bedeutung des Masses, die Elle; 3) die Bedeutung: Winkel, Ecke (als Versteck), geht auf den ursprünglichen Begriff zurück. Die europäischen Sprachen [Cu. 563] zeigen ein 1, was, wie vieles andere, auf eine verschiedene Aussprache des westlichen und östlichen Zweiges des indogermanischen Urvolkes hinweist.

    Aratni. — This word, which primarily means ‘elbow,’ occurs

    frequently from the Rigveda1 onwards as denoting a measure of

    length (‘ell’ or ‘cubit’), the distance from the elbow to the tip

    of the hand. The exact length nowhere appears from the early
