in the Mīmānsā S.: aprāptā cānupapattiḥ prayoge hi virodhaḥ

syācchabdārthastvaprayogabhūtastasmādupapadyeta; or in Pāṇini's S.:

saṃbhāvane'lamiti cetsiddhāprayoge (i. e. if the word alam is

not used in the sentence; Kāśikā: siddhāprayoga ityalamo vi-

śeṣaṇam . siddhaścedalamo'prayogaḥ). ² Wrong application (as

of an argument, i. e. arguing, or speaking wrongly); e. g.

in the Nyāya S.: na vyāghātādaprayogaḥ. ³ Strangeness, un-

usualness (as of a word), an unusual expression (although

it be grammatically correct); e. g. in the Vārtt. to Pāṇini:

aprayogaḥ prayogānyatvāt; Patanjali: aprayogaḥ khalvapyeṣāṃ

śabdānāṃ nyāyyaḥ (comp. the words ūṣa &c. in the instance

s. v. aprayukta 3.) . kutaḥ . prayogānyatvāt . yadeteṣāṃ śabdānā-

marthe'nyānprayuñjate . tadyathā . ūṣetyasya śabdasyārthe kva yūyamuṣi-

tāḥ . teretyasyārthe kva yūyaṃ tīrṇāḥ . cakretyasyārthe kva yūyaṃ kṛtavantaḥ .

pecetyasyārthe kva yūyaṃ pakvavanta iti. Comp. aprayuktatā. E. a
