    I. apratyaya 1. Tatpur. m. (-yaḥ) 1 Distrust, want of confidence;

    e. g. Śihlana: doṣāṇāṃ saṃnidhānaṃ kapaṭaśatamayaṃ kṣetramapratyayā-

    nām (scil. strīrūpam) ‘a woman's figure is…a field for

    all kinds of distrust’. 2 The not being perceived, under-

    stood or intelligible, the not resulting clearly (comp. apra-

    tīti); e. g. Bharatasena: rāmeṇa…śravaṇasukhakāribhi-

    rninādaiḥ kalahaṃsamālāḥ pratīyire… . ninādaśrutivyatireke-

    ṇāpratyaye hetugarbhaviśeṣaṇamāha. 3 (In Grammar.) a. No-affix,

    a letter not being an affix or not belonging to an affix;

    e. g. in Pāṇini's Sūtra: idudupadhasya cāpratyayasya. b. Absence

    of an affix; e. g. the Kāśikā on the ved. loc. sing. carman or

    the voc. rājan &c., nalopapratiṣedhavacanādapratyaya iti pratyaya-

    lakṣaṇena prātipadikasaṃjñā na pratiṣidhyate; or in the Vārtt. to

    Pāṇini: apratyaye tathaiveṣṭaḥ (Kaiyy.: pratyayābhāve'pi pūrvapado-

    ttarapadayoranyatarasya vā lopa ityarthaḥ); or Patanjali on the

    formation abhisusū, abhisusūṣaterapratyayaḥ; or the same on

    anusū, anusūterapratyayaḥ (comp. also the remark under 2. 2.).

    2. Bahuvr. m. f. n. (-yaḥ-yā-yam) 1 Having no confi-

    dence, distrusting; e. g. in the Śakunt.: ā paritoṣādviduṣāṃ

    na sādhu manye prayogavijñānam . balavadapi śikṣitānāmātmanya-

    pratyayaṃ cetaḥ. 2 (In Grammar.) Having no affix; e. g. Pa-

    tanjali on the word pād, ayamasti pādayaterapratyayaḥ pāt;

    (as the absence of an affix is in this and similar instances

    the effect of the disappearance of an assumed affix v which

    is always dropped, apratyaya and vpratyaya, or as the latter word

    is written for the sake of euphony Pāṇ. VI. 2. 52. and VI.

    3. 92: vapratyaya, become synonyms;--comp. the insertion of

    an a for a like purpose in the ādeśa adḍ and Kaiyyaṭa's

    remark on VII. 1. 25.: tenoccāraṇārtho'kāro dakāramātraṃ

    II. apratyaya Karmadh. m. (-yaḥ) (In Grammar.) The affix

    a, esp. when a is also the technical name of the affix,

    as in Pāṇini; e. g. the samās. aff. a, ṛc . pur . ap . dhur .

    pathin . ityetadantātsamāsātsamāsānto'pratyayaḥ syāt; or the

    kṛt aff. a (in the Kāśikā on the word bhikṣā of the com-

    pound bhikṣāmātra VI. 2. 14.): tatra bhikṣāśabdo gurośca hala

    (III. 3. 103.) ityapratyayānto'ntodāttaḥ. (Instead of II. apra-

    tyaya, however, the commentaries prefer in general the ex-
