apāṅga n. (-ṅgaṃ)

1 The outer corner of the eye.

2 A sectarial mark or circlet on the forehead. mfn. (-ṅgaḥ-ṅgī-ṅgaṃ) Maimed, crippled.

apāṅga I. Tatpur. m. (-ṅgaḥ) ¹ The outer corner of the eye.

(In Medicine mentioned amongst the marman or vital parts

above the clavicle.) ² A sectarian mark on the forehead,

made with coloured and fragrant pigments, as with saffron,

Sandal &c.; comp. patrāvalī.

II. Bahuvr. 1. m. f. n. (-ṅgaḥ-ṅgā or ṅgī-ṅgam) Maimed,

crippled. E. apa and aṅga; the Tatpur. being explained:

apagato'ṅgāt. The femin. of the Bahuvr. is either ṭāp

or ṅīṣ according to Pāṇ. IV. 1. 54. v. 1.; and the same

remark applies to apāṅga when it is a latter part of a

Bahuvr. compound; the rule IV. 1. 56. not being to the con-

trary, since it merely concerns uncompounded words of

several syllables, in the sense of svāṅga q. v.

2. m. (-ṅgaḥ) A name of Kāma. E. apa and aṅga.

The outer corner of the eye, Daśak. in

Chr. 190, 15. — In comp. adj. the fem.

terminates in gī and gā, Rām. 5, 38, 7;

2, 30, 34. — Comp. Śukla-, m. a peacock.

some limb; (as), m. the outer corner of the eye

(sometimes as last member of a feminine comp. ending

in ā or ī); a sectarial mark or circlet on the forehead;

Aspera. —Apāṅga-darśana, am, n. a side glance, a

leer, a wink. —Apāṅga-deśa, as, m. the place round

the outer corner of the eye. —Apāṅga-netra, as, ā,

am, having eyes with beautiful outer angles.
