apāṃ

apāṃ enters into several compounds; e. g. apāṃsaṃvartaḥ destruction of the world by water; apāṃvatsaḥ ‘calf of waters’, N. of a star; apāṃnapāt, °naptā, °napttriya, °garbha, apānnapāt, aponapāt Ved. N. of Agni or fire as sprung from water; cf. Ms. 9. 321; apāṃpatiḥ, nidhiḥ nāthaḥ, appatiḥ lord of waters, the ocean; N. of Varuṇa; apāṃpittaṃ, appittaṃ fire.

Apāṃ hradaḥ m.: Name of a tīrtha.

Aṅgiras told Bhīṣma that one who

practises chastity, has controlled his anger, is

devoted to truth and does not cause injury

to others (brahmacārī jitakrodhaḥ satya-

saṃdhas tv ahiṃsakaḥ) bathes (upaspṛśya)
