anyatara 1. (see sarvanāman) m. f. n. (-raḥ-rā-rad(-rat); the dat.,

abl., gen. and loc. sing., the nom. and gen. plur. are similar

to the corresponding cases of anya q. v.) ¹ Either of two;

e. g. ubhayoḥ pakṣayoranyatarasyādhyāpanādapratiṣedhaḥ; or nityo-

palabdhyanupalabdhiprasaṅgo'nyataraniyamo vānyathā (Śaṅkara: a-

nyatarasyātmana indriyasya vā śaktipratibandhaḥ &c.); or svāpyaya-

saṃpattyoranyatarāpekṣamāviṣkṛtaṃ hi (i. e. either of profound sleep

or of final emancipation).--In the rules of Pāṇini anyata-

rasyām (the locat. sing. of the femin.) ‘in either way’ means

that a given rule is optional, may take place or not; comp.

for synonymous terms vā, vibhāṣā, and the more precise terms

aprāptavibhāṣā, prāptavibhāṣā, ubhayatravibhāṣā, vyavasthitavi-

bhāṣā, mahāvibhāṣā, sarvavibhāṣā, also vibhāṣita, ubhayathā,

vikalpa. ² The other of two (one having been mentioned)

[this meaning is probably meant when the Amarakosha, He-

machandra &c. make anyatara a synonyme of anya ‘other’];

e. g. in the Vārttika to Pāṇini V. 2. 47 eko'nyataraḥ, where

anyataraḥ is opposed as nimeyam to the word expressing the

nimānam, as in the instance dvimayamudaśvidyavānām, where

udaśvit ‘the object to be valued which is eka ‘one’, is

nimeya, and the yava ‘the object determining the value (ni-

mānam or mūlyam) is nimāna’ (comp. Kaiyyaṭa: anyataraśa-

bdena nimeyameva vivakṣitam . eka eva yadi nimeyaguṇo bhava-

ti tadā pratyayaḥ). ³ One of two, each being one of many;

in this sense its use is probably restricted to passages be-

longing to the vaidik period, when it is followed by a cor-

relate anyatara, both implying then ‘the one--the other,

one--another’ (comp. anya--anya); e. g. Śatapathabr.

anyatarasyām, loc. f. either way. —Anyatara-

tas, ind. on one of two sides. —Anyatarato-danta,

as, ā, am, having teeth on one side (only). —Anya-

tare-dyus, ind. on either of two days.

anyatara , adj., like Pali aññatara (and cf. katara,

q.v.) is very commonly used without its Skt. limitation

to one of two; rather, as equivalent of Skt. anyatama

(which is also used in BHS in the same way, notably in

Divy and Av), and chiefly (1) in the mg. a certain; (an

unspecified) one (of many): Mv i.36.10 (here could be

interpreted in mg. 2); 343.4; ii.31.19; 65.1; 96.15; 145.4;

171.9; 461.14; iii.15.7; 53.13; Divy 102.8; 226.19; 227.26;

254.6; Av i.137.11; 208.8; 235.6; 244.3; Suv 214.4; RP

39.16; Śikṣ 39.1 (wrongly rendered another by Bendall

and Rouse); Gv 84.17; Karmav 32.12; 35.16; Laṅk

176.8; (2) much more rarely, another, any other (of an

unlimited number); so possibly (but not probably) Mv

i.36.10, above; and RP 56.19 sarvathānapekṣo 'bhūt kāye
