anyā

anyā. The feminine of anya ‘other, different’ &c. q. v. This

word deserves notice only from the circumstance that it oc-

curs in some vaidik passages with the udātta accent on the

first syllable, instead of having this accent on the last syllable.

[Sāyaṇa is not the author of the meaning ‘never drying-up’

and of an etym. ‘a and nyā, contracted of ni-yā’ which have

been lent to this word by a new kind of vaidik exegesis.]

anyā a-nyā, f., Ved. (nyā contracted fr.

niyā ?), not drying up (as the milk of a cow ?); or

anyā, f. of anya, other (the accent being altered ?).

ányā , die gegebene, von STEVENSON zuerst aufgestellte Erklärung wird sichergestellt durch ánya n. das Nichtversiegen, Unerschöpflichkeit: sā nò bhūmìrgoṣvapyanyê dadhātu (für gavāmanye) AV. 12, 1, 4. Die versuchte Ableitung ist unhaltbar, weil yā mit ni eine andere Bedeutung hat.
