gvyāpinīrlocanalobhanīyā mṛjānvayāḥ snehamiva sravantīḥ . ṛ-
jvāyatāḥ śasyāviśeṣapaṅktīstutoṣa paśyanvitṛṇāntarālāḥ (comm.
mṛjā śuddhiḥ…tayā anvayo'nugamo yāsāṃ śuddhyanugatā
ityarthaḥ). 2 Retinue, attendance; e. g. kā tvamekākinī bhīru
niranvayajane vane (comm. niranvayā niranugamā janā yasmi-
nvane). 3 Family, race, lineage (in general); e. g. anvayā-
divibhinnānāṃ yathā sakhyamanīpsitam &c. Comp. anvavāya.
4 The male descendants (in contradistinction from the fe-
male succession); e. g. māturduhitaraḥ śeṣamṛṇāttābhya ṛte'nvayaḥ
(scil. vibhajerannṛktham; comm. anvayaḥ putrādiḥ, or accord. to
another comm. anvayapadena putrāṇāmadhikāraḥ). 5a. Logical
connexion (esp. of words); e. g. arpaṇaṃ svasya vākyārthe para-
syānvayasiddhaye . upalakṣaṇahetutvādeṣā lakṣaṇalakṣaṇā; also with
a noun in the instrum.; e. g. śaṅkāṃ mā kṛthā iti pūrveṇānvayaḥ
(the words of the verse Bhaṭṭik. 1. 22. being logically con-
nected with śaṅkāṃ &c. of the preceding verse); more seldom
with a word in the locative, e. g. in a comm. on the Ve-
dānta Sūtra ‘vākyānvayāt’ which is explained: etāvadare kha-
lvamṛtatvam . ityupasaṃhāreṇāsya vākyasya brahmaṇyanvayāt. b. Gram-
matical connexion of the words in a sentence, grammatical
construction of a sentence; in this sense very frequently
used in the commentaries, in the same manner as saṃbandha.
Sometimes the two latter meanings will coincide, e. g. (in
a Mīmānsā-discussion on the question: whether the bearing
of a passage is conveyed by the words of a sentence or not,
when the wrong thesis, that it is not, is thus refuted:) mai-
vam . anvaye śeṣaśeṣibhāvasyāntarbhāvāt . na hi guṇapradhānabhā-
vamantareṇānvayaḥ saṃbhavati . dvayorguṇayoḥ parasparākāṅkṣārahita-
tvenānvayayogyatvābhāvāt . evaṃ dvayoḥ pradhānayorapi . ato
vyutpattisaṃbhavātkriyākārakatadanvayo yathā śābdaḥ . tathā tada-
nvayāntargataḥ śeṣaśeṣibhāvo'pi śābdaḥ .. 6 (In Philosophy,
esp. in the Nyāya and Vaiśeṣika, and in scientific language
in general.) a. Logical consequence; e. g. in a comm. on a
Yoga Sūtra na hi kvacidapi kleśānāṃ viparyayānvayanirapekṣarū-
pāṇāṃ svarūpamupalabhyate; or in the Yoga Sūtra: sthūlasvarūpasū-
kṣmānvayārthavattvasaṃyamādbhūtajayaḥ, where the word anvaya is ex-
plained: khyātikriyāsthitiśīlāguṇāḥ kāryasvabhāvānupātino
anvayaśabdenoktāḥ; or in another Yoga Sūtra: grahaṇasvarūpā-
smitānvayārthavattvasaṃyamādindriyajayaḥ, where it has the same
meaning. b. Logical continuance; in this sense the word is
opposed to vyatireka ‘logical discontinuance’ and occurs, for
the most part, either combined with the latter to a Dwandwa
(see also anvayavyatireka), or in reference to it. Again the
general notion of ‘logical continuance and discontinuance’ be-
comes modified aa. when applied to the notion of genus, into
to the notion of species and variety; e. g. in a Mīmānsā dis-
cussion: nanvānantyavyabhicārābhyāṃ na vyaktau vyutpattiḥ saṃbhavati .
anantā hi govyaktayaḥ… . śuklavyaktau vyutpanno gośabdaḥ kṛ-
ṣṇavyaktau prayujyamānaḥ svārthaṃ vyabhicaret…iti prāpte brūmaḥ .
anvayavyatirekābhyāmākṛteḥ śaktigrahaṇanimittatvācchabdārthatvaṃ ta-
syā evocitam .; or: anvayavyatirekābhyāṃ jātivācitvāt;
bb. when applied to the notion of subject and predicate or to
syllogizing in general, this term expresses congruity and dis-
parity, consecutiveness and exception (deviation), or affirmation
and negation; e. g. kāvyasvarūpatvenābhimatayoḥ śabdārthayoḥ raso
'sti na vā . nāsti cet . guṇavattvamapi nāsti . guṇānāṃ tada-
nvayavyatirekānuvidhāyitvāt . (also in this sense in a verse
of the Rājataraṅgiṇī: svadeśo'yaṃ videśo'yamiti buddheḥ
pravartakaḥ anvayavyatirekābhyāṃ sthityabhyāsaḥ śarīriṇām; or of
the Bhāgav. Purāṇa: etāvadeva jijñāsyaṃ tattvajijñāsunātmanaḥ .
anvayavyatirekābhyāṃ yatsyātsarvatra sarvadā); and comp. kevalānva-
yin, kevalavyatirekin, anvayavyatirekin, anvayavyāpti, vya-
tirekavyāpti. cc. when applied to the notion of law, it ex-
presses rule and exception, or positive and negative clause;
e. g. anyodaryaḥ…saṃsṛṣṭī dhanaṃ harenna punaranyodaryo dhanaṃ hare-
dasaṃsṛṣṭī . anenānvayavyatirekābhyāmanyodaryasya saṃsṛṣṭitvaṃ dhanagra-
haṇe kāraṇamuktam.--E. i (iṇ) with anu, kṛt aff. ac.
