name (see saṃjñā) which conveys its own meaning (when
etymologically analyzed) and therefore distinct from techni-
cal names such as ghu, liṭ &c., which are purely technical;
such saṃjñāḥ as sarvanāman, karmapravacanīya, anunāsika, svara-
bhakti &c. &c. are anva°; thus Patanj. observes on the word
‘karmapravacanīyāḥ’: kimarthaṃ mahatī saṃjñā kriyate . anvartha-
saṃjñā yathā vijñāyeta, and Kaiyyaṭa on the latter: anvarthasaṃ-
jñeti . arthamanu gatārthena vānugatāṅgīkṛtapravṛttinimittā yā sā
saṃjñā anvarthasaṃjñā. 2 A proper name in general which has
preserved its etymological sense; e. g. dīrghabāhu the name
of a Rākṣasa.
II. Bahuvr. m. f. n. (-ñjñaḥ-ñjñā-ñjñam) Bearing a name
which conveys its etymological meaning, properly called (so
and not otherwise); e. g. anvarthasaṃjñaiva paraṃ trimārgagā (i. e.
gaṅgā). E. anvartha and sañjñā.
