anvartha

anvartha I. Bahuvr. m. f. n. (-rthaḥ-rthā-rtham) Having an obvious

sense, having a sense easily to be understood from the

etymon, as simple words like vṛtti, kaṣāyavat, or com-

pounds, when analyzed into their constituent parts, such

as nibandha, dīrghapattra &c. The same as anugatārtha; comp. the

following words. (The word is taken as a Bahuvr. by Val-

labhagaṇi on Hemach. 257. = 2. 171: anugato milito'rtho

'nayoranvarthe; but it may be also a Tatpur.)

II. Avyayībh. (-rtham) According to the literal sense (arising

from the etymon); literally; e. g. kriyāyāḥ pratiṣedhena tatphalasya

vibhāvanāt . jñeyā vibhāvanaivāsau sānvarthaṃ kathyate yathā ..

anvartha anv-artha, as, ā, am, having the

meaning obvious, intelligible, clear. —Anvartha-gra-

haṇa, am, n. the literal acceptation of the meaning

of a word (as opposed to the conventional). —Anvar-

tha-sañjñā, f. a term whose meaning is intelligible

in itself (opposed to such technical terms as bha,

ghu, &c.).

[anugataḥ arthaṃ] Having the meaning clear or intelligible, having a meaning easily deducible from the etymology of the word; hence, true to the sense, significant; tathaiva sobhūdanvartho rājā prakṛtiraṃjanāt R. 4. 12; anvarthā tairvasuṃdharā Ki. 11. 64; Śi. 12. 23; anvartha evāyamadhunā pralāpo vartate U. 3.; anvarthatopi nanu rākṣasa rākṣasosi Mu. 5. 7 in the true sense of the word, properly so called.

1 an appropriate name, a technical term which directly conveys its own meaning; e. g. bhaviṣyaṃtī a name for ‘future’ is an anvarthasaṃjñā compared with ḷṭ.
