    I. anu ind. (see nipāta, upasarga, gati, karmapravacanīya). A

    particle implying the notion of ‘after’ in its literal and

    metaphorical acceptations; it is used either as a separable

    preposition or as a prefix to verbs, but, in the latter ca-

    pacity, in the Vedas and in archaic passages of the epic

    literature, also detached from the verb, very much in the

    same manner as German prepositions when connected with

    verbs; in the Vedas it is sometimes also used adverbially.

    With nouns it may form Avyayībh., Tatpur. and Bahuvr.

    compounds. It means:

    1. (as a separable preposition, with a noun following

    or preceding in the accusative) 1 After; a. in space (literally),

    b. in time, implying successiveness, c. in rank or order, im-

    plying inferiority. 2 Along, lengthwise (in this sense also

    with a noun in the genitive). 3 With, together with (in this

    meaning, however, only in conventional phrases; e. g.

    parvatamanu or nadīmanvavasitā senā ‘the army was (so placed

    as to be) in communication with a mountain or with a

    river’. 4 To the part or share of; e. g. yadatra māmanu syāt

    ‘what there may fall to my share’. 5 By (implying dis-

    tribution); e. g. vṛkṣaṃ vṛkṣamanu siñcati ‘he throws water tree

    by tree i. e. he waters every tree. 6 After, in the sense of

    to, towards, in the direction of; e. g. vṛkṣamanu vidyotate vidyut

    ‘the lightning flushes after i. e. towards, in the direction of

    the tree’. 7 In regard to, in consequence of, on behalf of

    (only in conventional phrases), e. g. japamanu prāvarṣat ‘it

    rained in consequence of prayers’ or śākalyasya saṃhitāmanu

    or anuḍudyajñamanu prāvarṣat ‘it rained in consequence of the

    hymns of Sākalya (having been recited) or in consequence

    of an ox having being sacrificed’. 8 In accordance with, agree-

    ably to, like, similar. 9 According to the statement of, e. g.

    sādhurdevadatto mātaramanu ‘Devadatta is an excellent man,

    according to what his mother tells’.

    2. (as a prefix to verbs, undetached or detached) 1 After,

    in space or time, literally and metaphorically, e. g. gam,

    sajj, śī &c. with anu qq. vv. 2 Similarly, likewise (im-

    plying imitation); in accordance with, agreeably to, lit.

    and met., see f. i. kṛ, vac, jñā with anu &c.

    3. (as adverb, in the Vedas) Afterwards.

    4. (in composition with nouns) I. (In Avyayībh. com-

    pounds.) 1 After, a. in space (literally), e. g. anuratham,

    after, behind the cart; b. in order or rank, e. g. anujyeṣṭham,

    after, next to the eldest. 2 Along, lengthwise, on, e. g.

    anugaṅgaṃ vārāṇasī ‘Benares is situated along, i. e. on the

    Ganges’. 3 Near to; e. g. anuvanamaśanirgataḥ ‘it lightens near

    the forest’. 4 According to, agreeably to, like; e. g. anu-

    kramam ‘according to order, in due order’. 5 Severally, by;

    e. g. anudinam ‘day by day, daily’.

    II. (In Tatpur. compounds.) 1 After (in order or rank),

    subsequent, inferior, secondary; see f. i. anukanīyas, anu-

    kalpa, anunāyikā. 2 According to, in conformance with,

    similar, like to; e. g. anukūla, anuloma, anubrāhmaṇa. 3 Again;

    e. g. anulāpa.

    III. (In Bahuvr. compounds.) In conformity with, si-

    milar, like, e. g. anuguṇa, anurūpa &c. E. unknown; the

    native etym. an, uṇ. aff. u, is not plausible; anu is pro-

    bably connected in origin with ā, towards, in its oldest

    form āṃm̐ = aṃm̐s. See s. v. ā and the Preface.

    p. 85, col. 1.
    II. anu m. (-nuḥ) 1 (in the Vedas; esp. in the plural anavaḥ)

    Man in general; but it seems that this word is in the Vedas

    the name of a tribe or family, the meaning ‘men’ being

    an etymological interpretation of the commentaries. 2 The

    proper name of a king in the North, the fourth son of

    Yayāti by Śarmiṣṭā; according to others, a son of Kuru-

    vaśa or of Kuru. E. an, uṇ. aff. u.

    1. ánu. Grundbegriff: hinter einem andern her, ihm nachfolgend. Daher hat es fast alle Bedeutungen unseres „nach”; also räumlich „nach einem Ziele hin” (besonders mit dem Nebenbegriffe des Hinstrebens), zeitlich „nach” (post), bildlich „nach, gemäss” (secundum). Ferner entwickelt sich aus dem Grundbegriff in der Verbindung mit dem Acc. der Begriff „lāngs (einem Flusse oder Wege) hin”, dann aber auch der Begriff der Ausbreitung über ein zusammenhängendes Gebiet, oder über eine Vielheit, und zwar sowol in räumlicher als zeitlicher Beziehung (gr. ἀνὰ mit Acc.). In der ersten Bedeutungsreihe kommt es in zahlreichen Zusammenfügungen mit Verben vor, namentlich mit ar, arṣ, av, aś, 1. as, i. 1. ukṣ, 1. ṛdh, kṛ, krand, krap, kram, kruś, kṣar, khyā, gam, 1. gā, 1. gir, gṛbhāy, grabh, ghuṣ, cakṣ, car, cit, jan, jñā, takṣ, tṛd, dah, 1. dā, diś, dṛś, drū, dham, 1. dhā, 1. dhī, nam, nī, 1. nu, brū, bhā, bhū, (bhūṣ), bhṛ, mad, 1. man, mand, 1. 2. mā, mud, mṛj, mṛś, (yaj), yat, yam, yā, rakṣ, (rabh), 2. rāj, ri, 1. rudh, ruh, (labh), vac, vad, vaś, 2. 4. vas, vah, 1. vā, vid, vīray, vṛj, vṛt, vṛdh, ven, śaṃs, śak, śās, śrath, 1. cru, sac, sidh, sṛ, sṛj, stu, sthā, spaś, spṛś, sphur, smṛ, syad, 1. hā, hū. Anu, Ānava. — Grassmann and Roth1 see in these words

    designations of people foreign to the Aryans. But it is clear2

    that they denote a special people, the Anus, who are mentioned

    with the Yadus, Turvaśas, Druhyus, and Pūrus,3 with the

    Druhyus,4 and with the Turvaśas, Yadus, and Druhyus.5 It

    is also a fair conclusion from their mention in a passage of the

    Rigveda6 that they dwelt on the Paruṣṇī. The inference that

    the Bhṛgus were connected with this tribe is much more

    doubtful,7 for it rests solely on the fact that in one place8 the

    Bhṛgus and Druhyus are mentioned together, and not Anus and

    Druhyus. Ānava is used as an epithet of Agni,9 but also in the

    sense of ‘Anu prince,’10 in one case in conjunction with Turvaśa.11 [Footnote] 1) St. Petersburg Dictionary. [Footnote] 2) Zimmer, Altindisches Leben, 125. [Footnote] 3) Rv. i. 108, 8. [Footnote] 4) Rv. vii. 18, 14. [Footnote] 5) viii. 10, 5. [Footnote] 6) Rv. viii. 74. 15, compared with

    1 anu , indecl. in noun and verb cpds.; (a) in distrib-

    utive (? or intensive) noun cpds., as in Pali, CPD s.v.

    anu (g); also in JM, e.g. gāmāṇugāmaṃ Jacobi Erz. 13.2;

    rare in Skt., ‘typical in Buddh.’, Renou, Gr. scte. p. 94:

    divasānudivasaṃ, adv., day after day, Av i.208.10; 261.14;

    see kālānukālam, kṣudrānukṣudra, kṣudrakānukṣu-

    draka, anucāra, anudharma; but the usage is not al-

    ways clear and the last-named, at least, prob. does not

    belong here; (b) in verb cpds. used in many cases which

    have no parallels in Skt., nor (often) even in Pali or Pkt.;

    usually before other preverbs. See the following entries

    in this work. Very often it is hard to see any definite

    meaning which anu adds; Tib. in its wooden way renders

    by rjes su, after, which as Jäschke says ‘is often not to

    be translated’.

    2 anu = Skt. aṇu, subtle; subst. atom. So often spelled
