antarayaḥ, antarāyaḥ1 An impediment, obstacle, hindrance, what stands in the way; sa cet tvamantarāyo bhavasi cyuto vidhiḥ R.3.45,14.65; bahvantarāyayuktasya dharmasya tvaritā gatiḥ Pt.3.101; asya te bāṇapathavartinaḥ kṛṣṇasārasya antarāyau tapasvinau saṃvṛttau Ś.1 v. l. standing in the way. -2 (In Vedānta) Hindrance to the concentration of mind which is said to be of four kinds, laya, vikṣepa, kaṣāya and rasāsvāda. -3 An intervention, a covering, screen; dāhapremṇā sarasavisinīpatramā- trāntarāyaḥ Māl.3.12. -4 (With the Jainas) Interference or obstruction offered to those who are engaged in seeking deliverance, and consequent prevention of their accomplishment of it; one of the 8 classes of karman.
