Es bezeichnet ursprünglich das Gegenüberstehende (vgl. gr. ἄντα, ἄντην), daher 1) das dem Beschauenden Gegenüberstehende: die Nähe, Gegensatz parāká, die Ferne ({30,21}); daher im Loc. ánte fast dem gr. ἄντα, lat. ante gleichbedeutend ({860,11}), sowie dem vedischen ánti; 2) die einander gegenüberstehenden Enden oder Grenzen eines Dinges: Grenze, Ende, Gegensatz mádhya-m, die Mitte ({401,3}; {484,2}; {937,8}), und zwar nicht blos auf ein längliches Ding bezogen, sondern auch 3) auf einen Raum oder eine Fläche, also im letztern Falle der Rand, insbesondere der Erde oder des Himmels, oder noch häufiger 4) des Himmels und der Erde, divás pṛthivyā́s, wo an den Rand zu denken ist, in welchem beide nach dichterischer Anschauung zusammenstossen; doch bricht auch hier der Gegensatz der gegenüberstehender Enden, namentlich des östlichen und westlichen, mannichfach hervor; 5) bildlich wird es auf die Grenze der Grösse, der Kraft, des Reichthums, nur einmal 6) auf das Ende der Zeit ({179,2}) bezogen. 7) Insbesondere bedeutet es den Rand oder Saum eines Gewebes ({37,6}). Genau entspricht ihm das gothische and-s [m.], Grenze πέρας; die i-Form zeigt sich im goth. andi [n.], Ende. Vgl. ánti, ántama, ántaka.
