anagni

anagni m. (-gniḥ) A Brahman who has not maintained his household fire.

anagni I. Tatpur. m. (-gniḥ) Any thing not or different from

fire. E. a neg. and agni.

II. Bahuvr. m. f. n. (-gniḥ-gniḥ-gni) ¹ Having no sacrificial

fire or being deprived of the arrangement of a sacrificial

fire place (see agnicayana), as a sacrifice. ² Impious, irre-

ligious (as one not performing the observances which require

a sacrificial fire; also an epithet of the Manes agniṣvātta

q. v.). ³ Unmarried(?). ⁴ Having no domestic fire, no fire

for worldly purposes (as an anchorite who has given up

his house and retired to the wood). ⁵ Having a bad di-

gestion. E. a priv. or (in 5.) deterior. and agni.

anagni an-agni, is, m. non-fire; substance

differing from fire; absence of fire; (is, is, i), re-

quiring no fire or fire-place; not maintaining the

sacred fire, irreligious; unmarried; dispensing with

the use of fire; dyspeptic. —An-agni-tra, as, ā, am,

or an-agni-trā, ās, ās, am, not maintaining the

sacred fire, irreligious (?); not enjoying Agni's pro-

tection (?). —An-agni-dagdha, as, ā, am, not burnt

with fire; not burnt on the funeral pile (but buried);

(ās), m. pl., N. of a class of manes. —Anagni-

ṣvātta, ās, m. pl. = preceding; see agni-dagdha

and agni-ṣvātta under agni.

ANAGNI (S). They are Pitṛs. Pitṛs like Agniṣvāttas,

Barhiṣads, Anagnis, Sāgnis were offsprings of Brahmā.

Two damsels, Menā and Dhāriṇī were born to them

of Svadhā. (Agni Purāṇa, Chapter 20).
