anāthapiṇḍada

anāthapiṇḍada Tatpur. m. (-daḥ) The name of a celebrated

merchant, the owner of the garden Jetavana near Śrāvasti,

where the Buddha Sākyamuni used to explain his doctrine

to his disciples. He was also called anāthapiṇḍika. E.

anātha and piṇḍa-da ‘giving food to the poor’.

a-nātha—piṇḍa-da or a-nātha—piṇḍika, m. ‘giver of cakes or food to the poor’, N. of a merchant (in whose garden Śākyamuni used to instruct his disciples).
