1. ámbhas (ambhar) n. Gewalt, Furchtbarkeit. VS. 18, 4. erscheinen paarweise: jyaiṣṭhyam und ādhipatyam, manyuḥ und bhāmaḥ, amaḥ u. ambhaḥ, jemā u. mahimā u. s. w. Aehnlich AV. 13, 4, 6, 5 : ambhò amò mahàḥ sahà iti tvopā̂smahe vàyam, während 2, 1. in den Worten kī̀rtiścà yaśàścāmbhâścà nabhâśca brāhmaṇavarcàsaṃ cānnâṃ cā̀nnādyâṃ ca das nabhaśca ungehörig eingeschoben ist (in Erinnerung an die Bedeutung von 2. ambhas) und die Paargliederung stört. In 6, 6. dagegen scheint ambhaḥ aus der vorangehenden Zeile irrthümlich hereingekommen zu sein: ambhô arùṇaṃ râjàtaṃ rajàḥ sahà itì tvopā̂smahe vàyam . Im gaṇa svarādi erscheinen ambhas und ambhar indecll. als v.l. von amnar .
ámbhas, n., Wasser [Cu. 485]; es ist wahrscheinlich mit nábhas und also der Wurzel nabh verwandt, also ursprünglich das hervorquellende [vgl. aś und naś, akṣ und naks, añj und nij, nagna, gr. ὀμφαλό-ς und Nabel, nā́bhi]; auch die Begriffe Fruchtbarkeit, Macht, Gewalt (AV; VS) gehen wol durch allmähliche Entwickelung aus dem Begriffe Wasser, Feuchtigkeit hervor.
