    Agre, ind. (loc. of agra), in front; before; in the

    presence of; at the head; first; ahead, beyond,

    further on, i. e. subsequently to. —Agre-ga, as, ā,

    am, going in front or before; (as), m. a leader.

    —Agre-gā, ās, or agre-gū, ūs, or agre-ṇī, īs, m.

    a leader. —Agretvan (°gra-it°), ā, arī, a, Ved. going

    in front or before. —Agre-didhiṣu, us, m. a man

    belonging to one of the first three classes, who at his

    first marriage takes a wife that was married before;

    (us or ū, ūs), f. a married woman whose elder sister

    is still unmarried. —Agre-pā, ās, ās, or agre-pū, ūs,

    ūs, m. f. having the precedence in drinking. —Agre-

    bhrū, ūs, m. roaming in front. —Agre-vaṇa, am, n.

    the border of a forest. —Agre-vadha, as, m. hitting

    or killing whatever is in front. —Agre-sara, as, ā or

    ī, am, going in front, preceding, taking the lead.

    —Agre-sara or agre-sarika, as, m. a leader.

    agre adv.

    1 In front of, before (in time or space); agre yāṃti rathasya reṇupadavīṃ ghanāḥ V. 1. 4, R. 2. 56, V. 2. 7, Bh. 3. 36.

    2 In the presence of, before; mamāgre stuvaṃti H. 1.

    3 At the head, ahead; balāgre tiṣṭhate vīro nalaḥ Rām.

    4 Further on, subsequently, in the sequel; evamagre vakṣyate, evamagrepi draṣṭavyaṃ &c.

    5 In the beginning; at first, first; pratāpogre tataḥ śabdaḥ parāgastadanaṃtaraṃ R. 4. 30; ātmaivedamagra āsīt Bṛ. Ār. Up., Ms. 2. 169.

    6 First, in preference to others; savarṇāgre dvijātīnāṃ praśastā dārakarmaṇi 3. 12; atithibhyo 'gra evaitān bhojayet 3. 114.

    didhiṣuḥ ṣūḥ a man (of one of the first three castes) who marries a wife married before ( punarbhūvivāhakārī). (

    ṣūḥ) f. a married woman whose elder sister is still unmarried (jyeṣṭhāyāṃ yadyanūḍhāyāṃ kanyāyāmuhyate'nujā . sā cāgredidhiṣūrjñeyā pūrvā ca didhiṣūḥ smṛtā); °patiḥ the husband of such a woman.

    pūḥ [agre pūyate, pū-kvip] purifying in one's presence; having precedence in drinking.

    Mv i.165.16, from this point (of time). Cf. Pali agge, only

    in cpds.; and -agreṇa, in cpds., in same meaning and

    much more commonly. Cf. also Skt. agre, used (see pw

    s.v. agra) in much the same way but apparently recorded

    only in ŚB.
