ágra, n. Grundbegriff ist „das Vorangehende”, also das erste einer Reihe oder das vor ihr her gehende. Die Wurzel ist aj und zwar in der Begriffsausprägung „führen, vorangehen”, wie sie im griechischen ἄγω, ἀγός, ἄκτωρ besonders aber in ἡγεῖσθαι, στρατ-ηγός u. s. w. hervortritt [s. Cu. 117]. So wird von dem Heerführer (senānī́) in {808,1} gesagt, dass er an der Spitze (ágre) des Heeres und der Kriegswagen gehe. Zeitlich bedeutet es daher den Anfang und in der Vergleichung das Vorzüglichste, als Theil eines Ganzen, den Vordertheil oder die Vorderseite; nur bei den Gegenständen, bei denen sich der Gegensatz des Vorn und Hinten in den des Oben und Unten umsetzt, wie beim Baume, dem Feuer, der Wasserfläche bedeutet es den obern Theil oder die obere Seite mit dem Gegensatz der Wurzel (mū́la) oder des Bodens (budhná) und der Mitte (mádhya). Also: 1) das Vorangehende, und in diesem Sinne (aber auch nur in diesem) die Spitze, mit dem Gen. dessen, was folgt; 2) insbesondere mit den Verben des Gehens, Führens und ähnlichen; 3) der Anfang; 4) insbesondere der Anbruch der Morgenröthen (uṣásām u. s. w.), der Tageshellen (áhnām); 5) das Vorzüglichste, mit dem Gen. dessen, worunter es das Vorzüglichste ist oder was davon übertroffen wird (für den Abl. kein sicheres Beispiel), besonders häufig mit mádhvas oder mádhūnām; 6) der vordere Theil, z. B. der Zunge, vielleicht 7) die Vorderseite; 8) Gipfel des Baumes oder Feuers, Oberfläche des Wassers, Gegensatz budhná (mū́la), mádhya; 9) ágre, adverbial voran oder 10) zuerst oder 11) vorzugsweise.
