nām); or Hitop.: durjanaḥ prakṛtiṃ yāti sevyamāno'pi ni-

tyaśaḥ . svedanābhyañjanopāyaiḥ śvapucchamiva nāmitam. ² Making

clear or bright, manifesting; (see the meaning 4.). ³ The

same as abhyaṅga 2.; e. g. Kātyāy. Śrauta S.: evaṃ pratiprasthātā

patnīmabhyañjanādi tūṣṇīm; or Manu: bhojanābhyañjanāddānādya-

danyatkurute tilaiḥ . kṛmibhūtaḥ śvaviṣṭhāyāṃ pitṛbhiḥ saha majjati.

Sometimes used together and contrasted with a word

meaning a partial inunction of the body such as appli-

cation of collyrium to the eyes; e. g. Bhāgav. Pur.: añja-

nābhyañjanonmardastryavalekhāmiṣaṃ madhu . sraggandhalepālaṃkārāṃstyaje-

yurye dhṛtavratāḥ.--One of the great sacrifices (see sattra) which

lasts 49 days, is called, on account of the daily anointments

which form part of its ceremonial,--according to Śabara

on the Jaiminīsūtras and some Mss. of the Jaim. nyāyamālāv.

--añjanābhyañjana (e. g. Śab.: astyañjanābhyañjananāmakonapañcā-

śadrātraḥ &c.; Jaim.nyāy.: astyañjanābhyañjanasaṃjñaka ekonapañcā-

śadrātraḥ sattraviśeṣaḥ . tatra śrūyate . gauggulavena prātaḥsavane

'bhyañjanaṃ pailudāraveṇa mādhyandine savane saugandhikena tṛtīyasavana

iti), according to the Āśvalāyana- and Kātyāy. Śrauta S.

āñjanābhyañjanīya q. v.; e. g. Kātyāy.: āñjanābhyañjanīye

'bhiplavāḥṣaṭ ..…yathāsavanaṃ taiḥ (i. e. with butter pre-

pared with guggulu, sugandhitejana and pīludāru) savaneṣvāñja-

nābhyañjane kurvīrannāgnīdhre'harahaḥ; Yājnikad.: āñjanamakṣṇoḥ

(Ms. E. I. H. 1362. on book 24. 3. 13.: añjanamakṣṇoḥ) . abhya-

ñjanaṃ śarīrasyeti karkaḥ; on another occasion (Kātyāy. 21. 4. 26.)

the term abhyañjana is, in the same combination with āñjana,

said by the Saṅkṣiptasāra (as ‘extracted’ by Weber) to de-

note merely the ‘anointment of the feet’: āñjanamakṣṇorañjanaṃ

kajjalādinā . abhyañjanaṃ ca pādayostailāñjanam. ⁴ An unctuous

substance, esp. oil or butter; e. g. Ṛgv.: ātmā pitusta-

nūrvāsa ojodā abhyañjanam (Sāy.: abhyañjanamabhyañjanasādhanaṃ ghṛ-

tatailādikam; but he proposes also to take abhya° as an

accus., with an adv. sense, determining ojodā, viz. abhi-

vyaktaṃ yathā bhavati tathojodā, i. e. ‘imparting strength mani-

festly’); or Śatap.: tebhya āgatebhya āñjanābhyañjane prayacchanti;

or Mānava Kalpa S.: hastenāñjanābhyañjanalepaṃ nimārṣṭi (Kumā-

rila: abhyañjanaṃ tailam; on a subsequent Sūtra: añjanābhyañjana-

pātre tarhi draṣṭavye); or Suśr.: (cikitset…mṛtyuvaśaprayātaṃ)

tīkṣṇāñjanābhyañjanadhūmayogaiḥ &c.; or tailamabhyañjane (in the butter)

kāryaṃ kuṣṭhe sarjarase'pi vā (at the treatment of the children-

disease revatī); or nasyābhyañjanasekeṣu vidadhyādyogatattvavit .

kharāśvāśvatarolūkakarabhaśvaśṛgālajam. ⁵ A collyrium or appli-

cation to the eye-lashes; see añjana; e. g. Ṛgv., Atharv.:

cittirā upabarhaṇaṃ cakṣurā abhyañjanam . dyaurbhūmiḥ kośa āsī-

dyadayātsūryā patim; (Sāy.: cakṣurevāñjanamāsīt). This last

sense of the word is probably restricted to the vaidik pe-

riod. E. añj with abhi, kṛt aff. lyuṭ.
