out the juice of the Soma plant or Asclepias acida (see

also somābhiṣava), or in default of this plant, of its substi-

tute, the Pūtīkā or Cæsalpinia bonducella (see also pūtī-

kābhiṣava); it constitutes an essential ceremony of the

Soma sacrifices (see jyotiṣṭoma), and is performed the day

after the sacrificial acts called upasad (q. v.), by means

of stones (grāvan) which press on two boards (called

adhiṣavaṇa); the act takes place in the southern part of a

building erected in the western part of the Uttaravedi near

a cart which is placed there and bears, like the building,

the name havirdhāna. (Comp. e. g. Mādhava vv. ll.: yadi

somaṃ na vindeta pūtīkānabhiṣuṇuyāditi śrūyate;--dīkṣādi-

vasādūrdhvaṃ somābhiṣavadivasātpūrvaṃ kartavyā homā upasadaḥ;--

Mahīdhara: adhvaryubhiḥ sutā abhiṣavadharmeṇa grāvabhiḥ dravībhā-

vamāpāditāḥ; Mādhava: somābhiṣavādhārayoradhiṣavaṇaphala-

kayoḥ saṃtardanaṃ kāryam;--uttaravedyāḥ pratīcīne maṇḍape'bhi-

ṣavaḥ;--havirdhāne grāvabhirabhiṣutyāhavanīye hutvā sadasi

bhakṣayanti;--jyotiṣṭome śrūyate . uta yatsunvanti sāmidhenī-

stadanvāhuriti . havirdhānamaṇḍapagatayordakṣiṇottarabhāgayora-

vasthitayorhavirdhānanāmakayoḥ śakaṭayormadhye dakṣiṇaṃ śakaṭamatra

yattacchabdābhyāmabhidhīyate . tatra samīpe somasyābhiṣavaḥ).
