    Goldstücker Sanskrit-English Dictionary

    ☞ p. 289, col. 1.
    abhiṣṭi Tatpur. (ved.) I. 1. f. (-ṣṭiḥ) 1 Approaching, moving

    towards, access; e. g. Ṛgv.: abhīmavanvantsvabhiṣṭimūtayo'nta-

    rikṣaprāṃ taviṣībhirāvṛtam . indram &c. (Sāyaṇa: = śobhanā-

    bhyeṣaṇavantaṃ śobhanābhigamanamityarthaḥ i. e. with graceful motion);

    or sa vetasuṃ daśamāyaṃ daśoṇiṃ tūtujimindraḥ svabhiṣṭisumnaḥ &c.

    (Sāy.: = suṣṭvabhyeṣaṇīyānyabhigamyāni sumnāni sukhāni yena de-

    yāni i. e. who bestows happiness that is easy of access);

    comp. also abhiṣṭidyumna; or Ṛgv., Vājas.: vanemā te abhi-

    ṣṭibhiḥ (Mahīdh.: = mārgaiḥ, but comp. II. 1.). 2 Approaching

    in order to assist, assistance, help, protection; e. g. Ṛgv.:

    (indra) pāhi no dūrādārādabhiṣṭibhiḥ sadā pāhyabhiṣṭibhiḥ

    (Sāy.: = abhyāgamanaiḥ or abhita eṣaṇaiḥ); or yābhiḥ kaṇvama-

    bhiṣṭibhiḥ prāvataṃ yuvamaśvinā . tābhiḥ &c. (Sāy.: = apekṣi-

    tābhī rakṣābhiḥ). 3 The object to be approached or aimed

    at, wish, desire; e. g. Ṛgv.: ūtīryuvoraha citra abhīke

    abhavannabhiṣṭayaḥ (Sāy.: = sarvaiḥ prāṇibhirabhyeṣaṇīyā abhavan);

    or śatenā no abhiṣṭibhirniyutvāṃm̐ indrasārathiḥ (Sāy.: = abhita

    eṣaṇīyaiḥ kāmaiḥ); or Ṛgv.: indra sadyaścittamabhiṣṭaye karo

    vaśaśca vājinam (Sāy.: = abhimataprāptaye, but see also II. 1.);

    or Ṛgv., Vājas.: yo nūnaṃ mitrāvaruṇāvabhiṣṭaya ācakre (Mahīdh.:

    = abhimatalābhāya); or devaṃ devaṃ vo'vase devaṃ devamabhiṣṭaye

    (Sāy.: = abhilaṣitaprāptyartham; Mahīdh.: = abhilaṣitaphalāptaye,

    the sense of ‘attainment’ in the latter instances being rather

    implied by the fourth case than by the base of the word);

    or śaṃ no devīrabhiṣṭaya āpaḥ (Mahīdh.: = abhīṣṭāya; but

    comp. II. 1.); comp. also abhiṣṭikṛt.

    2. m. f. (-ṣṭiḥ) 1 One who goes towards; e. g. Ṛgv.:

    ā yaṃ pṛṇanti divi sadmabarhiṣaḥ samudraṃ na subhvaḥ svā abhiṣṭayaḥ

    (Sāy.: = ābhimukhyena gamanavatyaḥ). 2 One who approaches with

    a hostile purpose, attacking, conquering; an enemy; e. g.

    Ṛgv., Sāmav., Vājas.: (indra) mahāṃm̐ abhiṣṭirojasā (Sāy.:

    = abhigantā i. e. śatrūṇāmabhibhavitā, but see also II. 2.); or

    Ṛgv.: indra svarṣā janayannahāni jigāyośigbhiḥ pṛtanā abhiṣṭiḥ

    (Sāy.: = abhigantā i. e. abhibhāvukaḥ san); comp. also abhi-

    ṣṭipā. 3 One who approaches for the sake of a desire, desirous

    of; e. g. Ṛgv.: ūrjo napādabhiṣṭaye (Sāy.: = abhīcchate mahyamannaṃ

    prayaccheti śeṣaḥ). E. According to Sāyaṇa, iṣ with abhi, kṛt

    aff. ktin, when abhiṣṭi would stand in the room of abhīṣṭi,

    analogously to śakandhu, halīṣā &c. for śakāndhu, haleṣā &c.;

    a more plausible E., however, seems to be sthā with abhi,

    kṛt or uṇ. aff. ki, when abhiṣṭi would stand instead of

    abhiṣṭhi, analogously to suṣṭu, duṣṭu, pulasti (explained by

    Mahīdh. to Vāj. 16. 43.: paro'gre tiṣṭhati pulastiḥ . yasya tatvaṃ

    chāndasaṃ rasya latvaṃ ca) &c.; an E. as ‘to be’ with abhi.

    kṛt aff. ktin, which is countenanced, too, by another

    explanation offered by Mahīdhara on pulasti, might apply to

    the meaning ‘attacking, conquering’, but would be scarcely

    reconcilable with the meanings implying ‘approach’ and

    ‘assistance’.

    II. 1. f. (-ṣṭiḥ) Sacrificing towards, in presence of or

    completely, a complete sacrifice; e. g. Ṛgv.: indra sadyaścitta-

    mabhiṣṭaye &c. (see above 1. 1. 3.; the word being explained by

    Sāy. also ābhimukhyena yāgāya); or vanemā te abhiṣṭibhiḥ

    (Sāy.: = havirbhiḥ; comp. also I. 1. 1. and III. 1.); or śaṃ no

    devīrabhiṣṭaya āpaḥ (see above 1. 1. 3.; Sāy.: = yajñāya); or

    Vājas.: daivīṃ dhiyaṃ manāmahe sumṛḍīkamabhiṣṭaye (Mahīdh.: = abhi

    samantādyajanamabhiṣṭiḥ…abhimukhatvena prāptasya yajñasya si-

    ddhyartham); comp. also abhiṣṭikṛt.

    2. m. (-ṣṭiḥ) One to be worshipped by a sacrifice; e. g.

    Ṛgv.: mahāṃm̐ abhiṣṭirojasā (see above I. 2. 2.; Sāy. in the cor-

    responding Sāmaveda- verse: = ābhimukhyena yaṣṭavyaḥ, besides

    abhyeṣaṇaśīlo vā śatrūṇām); or Vājas.: īḍito devairhari-

    vāṃm̐ 2 .. abhiṣṭirājuhvāno haviṣā śardhamānaḥ (where the word

    has the same sense and need not be explained as a Bahuvr., as

    Mahīdh. does: abhi samantādiṣṭiryāgo yasya; comp. also III. 2.).

    E. yaj with abhi, kṛt aff. ktin; comp. the remark under E. I.

    III. 1. f. (-ṣṭiḥ) Praise, an encomiastic hymn; e. g.

    Ṛgv.: vanemā te abhiṣṭibhiḥ (see 1. 1. 1. and II. 1.; Sāyaṇa

    giving besides the quoted explanation also the sense stotraiḥ).

    2. m. (-ṣṭiḥ) One who is praised; e. g. Vājas.: īḍito

    devairhariśāṃm̐ 2 .. abhiṣṭiḥ (see II. 2.; Mahīdh. giving besides

    the quoted explanation also the following: abhiṣṭūyata itya-

    bhiṣṭiḥ). E. stu with abhi, uṇ. aff. ḍi (accord. to Mahī-

    dhara). [The meanings s. II. and III. and the correspond-

    ing EE. do not appear required by the context in the pas-

    sages where the word occurs; and the commentators them-

    selves either disagree or give the option of the meanings

    s. I. The Ṛgv. Prātisākhya observes that if abhiṣṭi pre-

    cedes as first part of a compound another word beginning

    with a s, this s does not become ṣ; e. g. svabhiṣṭisumna,

    not svabhiṣṭiṣumṇa.]
