abhiśasti Tatpur. f. (-stiḥ) I. 1 Abuse, calumny, scandal,

defamation (Med., Hemach., Viśvapr., Bhūripr., Ajayap.,

    Śabdaratnāv., &c. = apavāda or lokāpavāda); e. g. Ṛgv.:

uruṣyā ṇo abhiśasteḥ soma (Sāyaṇa: abhiśasterabhiśaṃsanāda-

bhiśāparūpānnindanāt); or Vājas., Atharv.: amutra bhūyādadha

    (v. 1. °dhi) yadyamasya bṛhaspate'bhiśasteramuñcaḥ (Mahīdh.: abhi-

śasteḥ . abhiśāpādapi lokāpavādādapi); hence personified:

(ved.) a slanderer, an enemy; e. g. Ṛgv.: jahī bhikitvo

abhiśastimetām (Sāy.: = enamabhiśaṃsakam); or tvaṃ devāṃm̐ abhi-

śasteramuñcaḥ (Sāy.: = abhiśaṃsakācchatroḥ); in the verse of the

    Ṛgv.: yuvaṃ sindhūṃm̐rabhiśasteravadyādagnīṣomāvamuñcataṃ gṛbhītān

it is probably more correct to take avadyāt as an appo-

sition to abhiśasteḥ than to consider abhiśasteḥ as a masc.

or as an adject. referring to avadyāt i. e. ‘you have liberated

the rivers from that crime, the slander’, (but Sāy. from

    ‘that notorious crime’: abhiśasterabhiśasyamānādabhitaḥ praka-

    ṭitādavadyāttasmātpāpādamuñcatam). 2 Asking, begging; (ac-

cording to the various Koshas mentioned above; some

comm. of the Amarak. however restrict its sense to the

‘religious begging’; thus Rāyam., Ramān., Nīlak., &c.:

bhikṣāmātre, Bharatam.: vratabhikṣāyām). E. śaṃs with abhi,

    kṛt aff. ktin.

II. Injury, destruction (ved.); e. g. Ṛgv.: nabho na rūpaṃ

jarimā mināti purā tasyā abhiśasteradhīhi (Sāy.: abhi-

    śasterhiṃsāhetoḥ); or somyāsaḥ…titikṣante abhiśastiṃ janā-

nām (Sāy.: abhiśastiṃ = hiṃsām; but Mahīdh. takes the

word in the latter instance, when it occurs in the corre-

sponding verse of the Vājas., in the sense and etym. of I. 1.

viz. = durvacanam); or Vajas.: samidasi sūryastvā purastātpātu

kasyāścidabhiśastyai (Mahīdh.: = hiṃsāyāḥ); also personified

in this sense: an enemy; when Sāyaṇa however, and pro-

bably wrongly, analyzes it as a Bahuvr. m.; comp. abhi-

śastipā, abhiśastipāvan and the following. E. śas with

    abhi, kṛt aff. ktin.
