    &c.) aś with abhi, uṇ. aff. uṇ, with an irregular con-

    traction in the second syllable (compare e. g. abhīkṣṇa);

    ‘finger’ and ‘arm’ because they perform work; or perhaps

    because they move quickly, ‘finger’ being derived in several

    synonymes from radicals implying motion, comp. aṅguli,

    sun; or perhaps because they ‘pervade; ‘rein’ esp. of the

    horses of the sun, metaph. as the rays; but acc. to Durga

    the two latter meanings would seem to refer to another E.,

    viz. a rad. implying checking, restraining, ‘for the rays

    check the water and the reins horses’; perhaps īś with

    abhi, kṛt aff. u; Durga to Yāska on Nigh. 1. 5. (raśmirya-

    Abhīśu is a common Vedic word1 denoting the ‘reins’ or

    ‘bridle’ of the chariot horses. The use of the plural is due to

    the fact that two or four horses, possibly five (daśābhīśu ‘ten-

    bridled’),2 were yoked to the car. [Footnote] 1) Rv. i. 38, 12; v. 44, 4; vi. 75, 6;

    Vājasaneyi Saṃhitā, xxxiv. 6; Śata-

    patha Brāhmaṇa, v. 4, 3, 14 (where it

    = raśmayaḥ, ‘reins’), etc. [Footnote] 2) Rv. x. 94, 7.
