aṃbikā1 A mother, good woman, also used like aṃbā as a term of respect or endearment; attikeaṃbike śṛṇu mama vijñaptiṃ Mk. 1. 2 N. of a plant (aṃbā 2); of another plant kaṭukī. 3 N. of Pārvatī, wife of Śiva; āśīrbhiredhayāmāsuḥ puraḥpākābhiraṃbikāṃ Ku. 6. 90. 4 N. of the middle daughter of Kāśīrāja and the eldest wife of Vicitra-Vīrya. Like her youngest sister she had no progeny, and Vyāsa begot on her a son named dhṛtarāṣṭra. Comp.—patiḥ, —bhartā N. of Śiva. —putraḥ, sutaḥ N. of dhṛtarāṣṭra.
Aṃbikā (I) — Wife of Śiva.1 Daughter of Dakṣa reborn of Menā.2 Pacified by Citraketu.3 Surname of Pārvati and Yogamāyā.4 Gave bhikṣā to Vāmana.5 In her honour a festival was celebrated at a sacred spot called Ambikāvana.
